You can reach Holbox from Cancun or Merida very easily by bus. It is a 3 hours trip to Chiquila, a small city on the beach, laying in front of Holbox island. From there, take a 40 minutes trip by boat to get to the island. The ferry from Chiquila is fun and ideal to observe the lagoon and all the birds and fish. The cost depends on which type of boat you are boarding, the fast one costs $4.00 USD and the slower one $1.10 USD.
Holbox is a world on its own. There is no nightclubs, no mall or shopping centers, all the roads are made of sand and there is almost no cars. The island is a true ecological dream and a true fishermen village. You will enjoy some of the best seafood, and you can be sure that it is the freshest available. The lodging offers goes from small cabins on the beach to 3-star hotel but all have in common a very ecological approach of the nature. Also don't miss the opportunity to explore Isla Pajaros, only 30 minutes away from Holbox. This protected island is only 200 feet long but receives every night the visit of thousands of birds from more than 155 diferents species. Around 40,000 flamingos visit the island from April to October.
There are no banks and not even ATM, so don't forget to bring with you some mexican pesos or US dollars. Most of the shops, restaurants and souvenirs stores don't accept credit card or travel cheques.
